Smart FTP

Step by step guide to uploading and downloading using Smart FTP

Installing the free software from the Smart FTP website

Locating files on your server and uploading
Finding files on Smart FTP and downloading

Different to printing business cards, magazines and similar media, which is called Offset Printing, at QuickSmart we work with large scale files to suit our commercial Signage like our banners, which can measure 1 meter, 5 meters or 50 meters. To ensure perfect image quality when printing, we need high resolution images - for example our Retractable Banner Stands are 825 mm wide, therefore we cannot enlarge a 200 mm, 72 dpi jpeg image to suit - this jpeg needs to be of high resolution, or at actual scale.

This is where we need an alternative to emailing through files - clients can email us up to 12MB, however Photoshop files with images range anywhere from 30MB to 300MB. We now have a faster solution to sending files on a CD - Smart FTP!

Smart FTP

You will need to install the Software on your computer, it is free Software and only takes up 5.3MB of disc space.
Go to www.smartftp.com and download Smart FTP Client. This should only take minutes.

Uploading

Once installed, open up Smart FTP and open your local browser  -> File -> New local Browser. This will open up to your desktop. From there, you can click through to locate the files you would like to upload onto our FTP site.

Details to our FTP site will be sent to you upon request.
These details can be entered into the top space bars, 'address', 'login', 'password' and 'port' all need to be filled in using lowercase letters! Hit enter and the browser will open up.

Locate public html folder, then clientupload.
Important:
You need to upload into the clientupload folder - any other folder might look like it is allowing the upload, but will not accept any files.

Find the files you would like to upload in your local browser, then click and drag into the clientupload browser. You will see the progress of your upload including speed and percentage completed.
Once the upload is finished, please notify us via email or phone call.

Downloading

The download works the same as the upload, but you are downloading from the remote browser (details entered in space bars at top) into your local browser (desktop or chosen folder on your computer).

Tip: Avoid slowing down all the computers on your network by downloading onto your Desktop, not onto the server!

Do not try to open the files you are downloading during the process, this will create an error and you will need to start downloading again. You can see that the file is completely downloaded once the icon on the left of the file name appears in the correct form, i.e. a Photoshop file will have the blue and green feather icon, a PDF file the red triangle and bar. If in doubt, wait for the person uploading to notify you of completion.

Trouble shooting

Common mistakes when using Smart FTP

  • Details entered into space bars using upper and lower case - these should all be in lower case

  • Uploading into the wrong folder - go through to -> public html -> clientupload

  • Wait until the upload is complete before starting your download, and the download is complete before trying to open the file, otherwise errors occur
