Screen printing will save you money when you need quantities above 100 units, below 100 units, it may be cheaper to choose wide format digital printing. To use wide digital format printing as a production technique, the artwork is 'nested' across the full width and runs along the roll of material. Elizabeth St Melb Vic

Many times, people think 'screen printing' when indeed, there are lots of different ways to make stickers, decals, signs or panels that have signwriting. Knowledge and use of Self Adhesive Vinyl Lettering, Wide Format Digital Printing (which is direct printing onto a substrate such as vinyl decal material) or a combination of using lots of techniques will save you money. Example, if your work is less than 100 units with two or three colours, it may be cheaper to use vinyl and screen print methods. > WA
 

Note: Screen Printing is the only production technique where extra colours require extra costs per colour. Each colour lay down is a new silk screen. Each Silk Screen is a separate can of ink, squeezed through a fine mesh. CMYK can also be screen printed, this would be 4 processes.

Silk Screen Printing

What is Silk Screen Printing?
The printing technique, is applying a non ink soluble emulsion on a fine woven fabric stretched across a flat rectangular frame and tensioned very tightly, so that when the printing ink is pressed down using a squeegee, the ink passes through the holes in the mesh where there is no emulsion onto the substrate.

 

Traditionally, Silk was used for the mesh, today, a strong polyester mesh is used.

Artwork: To get the artwork onto the mesh, Negative Film is used, and the image is 'burnt' onto the mesh with a powerful light. The non ink soluble emulsion is spread across the entire mesh, then, exposed to light. Just like traditional photography, the emulsion is exposed, then the un-exposed regions are washed away. This leaves some hardened emulsion (areas that will not print), and some clean mesh areas (areas that will print).

Screen Printing has more 'start' costs and 'set up' costs compared to other sign making techniques, however, once these cost are approved, the actual sign production speed is faster. This allows large quantities of the same image to be cheap.

An Example, when we print safety signs, most times, the order is 200 units in two colours. This is very fast, the film cost and set up cost is quickly out surpassed by production speed.

Different Resolutions. Screen Printing is lower in resolution to digital. At 45 lpi, this equates to approx 75 dpi, and is regardless of size. All printing using a Silk Screen is the same resolution.

Solids, because silk screening is a technique of squeezing ink through tiny holes in a mesh, the solid is achieved by what is known as dot gain. This means, the ink flows closely to the next dot, thus joining to make a solid lay down of colour.

Why is Silk Screen Printing cheaper? It is because of speed. Each panel is quick to finish and the machine time is faster. Durable, printed in Quality UV inks, each colour is light fast.
