Pixel Gain and Tiny Text

Full color printing Pixel Gain and Tiny Text

When you want very tiny text for printing there are a few considerations.

Printing in CMYK is a mix of inks applied at a different stage. That is, the Yellow is applied first, overlaid by Cyan, Magenta and Black. Machines and registration may move slightly.

The image here is a magnified view (20x) of what the ink laydown looks like. Knowing this, if you have very tiny text, less than 10pt, try designing your artwork to compensate for slight pixel gain. Also known as misregistration.

This also applies to full color digital printing equipment. The ink jets are capable of close registration, however, slight dot gain and ink spread may still occur. The material dyne levels may flow the ink or on cold day, the ink may migrate etc.

Artwork considerations: E.g. White Background, for tiny text, use pure Black or pure Cyan or Pure Magenta. For dark backgrounds, use pure White. On Dark Backgrounds, tiny Yellow words may appear to fill slightly.

Also, if your design is to be screenprinted, you may be able to use a solid coat process instead of dotted film when using a reverse black. This will significantly increase the clarity of the tiny text.

To avoid halo effect around text, design your art keeping in mind that at any stage, machinery will be used to produce your work.
