Complimentary Colours are tricky to use together without causing the similar values to contrast, which can make the colours 'flicker', hard to look at and illegible.

Following image is a common combination which can irritate the eye:

Red and green complemtary colours

The complimentary colours on the colour wheel are:
Green - Red
Orange - Blue
Yellow - Purple

Be cautious when using these colours together!

Complementary colors sit opposite each other on the color wheel.

Because they are opposites, they tend to look especially lively when used together. When you put complementary colors together, each color looks more noticeable.

Complementary pairs contrast because they share no common colors. For example, red and green are complements, because green is made of blue and yellow.

Complementary colors can appear very exciting and seem to vibrate when placed side by side.

However, when the colors are placed together, the eye jumps back and forth to each color, not knowing which one to focus on.

When it comes to signage, the main aim is for the viewer to read and focus on the message. So it's recomeded to use complimentary colors wisely.
