What are Web Colors ?

The www has different protocols for using color than signage or printing. In general, colors for the web are 256 using Alpha and Numerical codes to display the color onto a visual screen (your computer).

You can use more than 256 if you have a program like photoshop wherein it allows you to 'save for web'.

How to use colors for the web

To make your website browser friendly, ask your web designer or agency to consider the following:

Choose colors similar to your official company color that are suitable for all people across all platforms.
Choose colors that are not graduated
Choose colors that are recognized 'web safe'
Choose colors that are legible and crisp
The color wheel below shows base system web colors. You can choose more by adjusting color tones, hues, mathematic values and other settings. If you decide your companies color selection with the below color wheel choices, then uniformity can be achieved with offset printing, screenprinting, web, browsers and most other color coordinated business channels.

Digital Printing Colors

Screen and web colors will convert differently to an ink mix. Ink is ink, computers are computers.

For designers who wish to convert color from the web to live substrate prints, digital printing is CMYK. For assistance, www.pantone.com offer many books and systems.

We use a Solid to Process Conversion Book. It contains the numerical recipe of a color so that inside the computerized drawing (e.g. Photoshop or Corel) our graphic designers can best match each color and control it's converted color output when using ink.

The images and vector images you draw using computerized systems such as CorelDraw and Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop etc are capable of 16 million color combinations.

To achieve high quality visual images when you are designing on screen you need to match 'onscreen to actual'. This may require you to complete the following:
1. Monitor Calibration
2. Hard copy reference
3. Mathematical Reference knowledge of colors.
