We can recycle much of the waste that signage produces.

Firstly, we make sure all the silicone backing paper on vinyl is in a separate bin to solid wastes. Here in Australia, Visy Recyling accepts the backing paper as a waste paper product that is recycled.

The actual adhesive vinyl is not a recylclable plastic, so we are extremly careful when producing signs not to make errors, and we 'nest' all our plotter cut work to avoid unnessesary waste.

We DO NOT use foam for any laser cut projects. Foam lets off extremly bad gasses. Whilst it may be a cheap way to produce 3D signs. There are other materials that are better for the environment.

In regards to panel off-cuts such as steel, colorbond, or acrylic, we take to a metal recycling plant.

Inks and toners are re-batched.

If anyone else has suggestions, please write to us. Here at Australia Signs, recycling is very important.

I am just wondering how easy it is to recycle the backing paper from vinyl seeing as it has a silicon layer on it.

Thanks

Recycling of Silicon layer (backing paper)

The silicon process is a cationic free application and is typically made with in the range of 0.09 gsm coating. This means that the backing paper is completely recyclable. The paper itself is a new kraft and approx 140-180gsm which is capable of being further processed into quality paper products.
For our end, the material choice only costs a few cents extra to purchase originally and can be recycled so we make this choice to buy better quality to start with.

Other backing papers/liners etc may also have a PE coating with a purer silicone coating, these are also recyclable so we carefully separate each component for the reycling bin. Typically, the PE coating is less than 35 micron so can be mixed with grade 2 papers. (general packaging)

FYI, most paper recycling has more from INK issues than coating issues, and this is the same for most packaging.

Polyester liners are not used by us for other reasons, but can also be recycled into plastics. Polyester is a high grade plastic that can be used many times over. Lots of plastic packaging is Polyester.
