Color and TV Commercials

If you need a sign or graphic, background or back drop for a TV commercial, you should consider the following possiblities that Australia Signs can apply to the graphic.

1. Flat sheen laminate on any graphic. This stops light bounce back.
2. Reduce any thin borders or cross line graphic designs. This will 'flare' on a TV monitor.
3. Use colors that are not 'dayglo' so that the perceptive range of the digital or film camera is not argueing with the final color output.
4. Keep colors at full transparency, low value colors may 'shade' or 'flare'.
5. Go Big, ensure that any 'far shots' are not showing your sign or graphic as a pimple sized graphic that looks weak in size.
6. Avoid lines on angles. Lines may throw off the perception that the camera is straight. When possible, never use lines. They never appear well on a TV Commercial or Show.
7. Ask your video producer or design assistant what best suits that studio. They all have lots of experience in generating professional work and know the situation of the studio etc.
8. Outdoor, Go bigger. An over shot is far better than a small focus.
9. Press Release and Interview. Reporters, Cameramen, Still photographers etc will all have different room positions, line of sight, depth perception etc, make sure that the backdrop is not seen as 'underdone'. Go Big so that any camera angle will pick up at least 40% of a logo.


Choose a Color for a TV Commecial

Colors affect the mood and feel of the commercial in different ways. If you want to promote a sale, try using traditional red and white screens. For family shots, use blues and yellows, for beauty, try traditional pinks.

People are watching from a Distance

Viewers are typically watching from across a room. Keep your signage or backdrop very simple and quick to understand. If you picture or logo has blend, try to best represent the RGB value. Even though all signage made by any sign company is predominantly CMYK, the art dept can help advise the closest possible match.

TV commercials final output is RGB, this applies to digital and analog.

If you are creating a company backdrop or interview style backdrop that has logos, it may be better to make 50 logos spread across the panel than one larger. It should be considered the line of distance from the camera, the close up or depth of field when making a sign.

From above, bigger is always better, but if you need a 'headshot' sytle picture, add lots of mini logos.
A great example of this is the backdrop of the AFL or ACB interview boards. You can always see the sponsor logos and they always include larger ones for distant shots.
