What is Screenprinting?
Author Message
# - Edited by: signage

Screenprinting is signwriting process that allows consistency and accuracy in large quantities.

Many different substrates are available for screenprinting, such as adhesive vinyl, corflute, colorbond, hardened plastic etc.

Screenprinting uses an rubylith or acetate film that is plotter cut or printed.

The film is butted up to a mesh screen, which has a photosensitive emulsion fluid that is washed over it, and left to dry in a dark room.

The film and screen are then placed into a vacuum that sits in front of a UV light. The vacuum ensures that the film does not move around on the screen.

The UV light is ultra high and burns stright into the desired areas on the screen. Once exposed enough, the emulsion is washed off. The screen is then ready to be used as the printing template and the film is kept for future projects.

When Screen Printing, after the ink is pumped through the machine, a Flood Coater (which looks like a slightly curved aluminium edge) is used to spread a layer of the ink across the surface of the screen. After the Flood Coater has passed across the entire area with the coat of ink, a hard rubber Blade comes back across the screen from the other direction to press the ink evenly through onto the desired material.

Same principle applies to fabric, although the set up and run through is different.

In the most part, today, we print material using a digital print process.
